I must admit i really wanted to try this game and i think it looks cool, but there is a lot of bad press about it.....

Spore was without doubt the most anticipated game of the year. The game itself has blown away the people who have played it, but the DRM encouraged thousands to get their copy illegally. Already Spore has been downloaded more than 500,000 times on BitTorrent, and this number is increasing rapidly accrding to TorrentFreak.

Most critics agree that Spore is a great game. However, the users aren’t too happy with the absurd DRM restrictions that come with the game. EA decided that people who buy a legitimate copy of the game, are only allowed to install it three times.

The idea behind DRM is that it will stop people from pirating the game, but in reality, it often has the opposite effect. As Forbes points out, many commenters on various BitTorrent sites now legitimize downloading this game because the official copies include some heavy and intrusive DRM.

“You have the power to make this the most pirated game ever, to give corporate bastards a virtual punch in the face,” deathkitten writes in a comment on The Pirate Bay. He or she is spot on. Spore has been the most downloaded torrent on The Pirate Bay for over a week, which is unique for a game.

Since September 2nd when Spore first appeared on BitTorrent, it has been downloaded a little over 500,000 times across various BitTorrent sites according to our most recent statistics. This download rate exceeds that of any other pirated game in history, and in a week or two from now it will be the most pirated game ever on BitTorrent.

One ironic statement released to the gaming community by Electronic Arts stated, "You can install the game on three computers – at your office, at home or for your family. What you can’t do is make and distribute a thousand copies online." This is exactly what is happening as stated in a Torrentfreak article; many would-be buyers have chosen to pirate the game because of the invasive DRM.

On Saturday, Torrentfreak wrote that the game had already been downloaded more than 500,000 times on BitTorrent sites. This download rate exceeds that of any other pirated game in history, and in a week or two from now it will be the most pirated game ever on BitTorrent based on Torrentfreak statistics.

For comparison Crysis, one of the best selling PC games of this year has only been downloaded 420,000 times since it was released in November 2007. Although the record breaking piracy of Spore cannot be attributed solely to consumers rejecting the DRM implemented within it, it most likely helped.

Dark powders missus had it, it looked ok but I think you should het in touch with him and ask what they think of it. She showed me it up and running and it looked good, as well as been told it was addictive. I dont think I would have the time to commit fully to playing tbh.

Bit more on the intrusive and annoying DRM being peddled by EA.......EA are now being sued over it....http://www.dailytech.com/Electronic+Arts+Sued+Over+Spore+DRM/article13055.htm

Quote:
The suit claims, “Consumers are not warned about the program, which is installed without notice and cannot be uninstalled, even if they uninstall Spore”. The lawsuit accuses Electronic Arts of deliberately hiding the fact that Spore uses SecuROM and claims the DRM software prevents the computer from operating under certain circumstances and/or disrupting hardware operations. The suit also claims that SecuROM takes over a portion of a PC's processing resources "to transmit information back to EA." The lawsuit is seeking an award for all plaintiffs the $49.99 purchase price plus damages. The details of the lawsuit are available in PDF format.

And from Custom PC...

Quote:
EA have had a LOT of bad publicity recently. They’ve been slated accross the web and as a result, they’ve been forced to gradually relax their DRM policies due to overwhelming customer complaints (They are now allowing you to de-authorise machines, so you should have no worries if you remember to do this before you do any re-installs or upgrades). It’s definately a step in the right direction, however, none of this changes the fact that SecuROM is installed on your computer, without permission, and could potentially interfere with the normal operation of your computer.

There’s also the case of the blatant lies printed in the manual about being able to have multiple spore profiles on one installation. This turned out not to be the case, and if several people (ie a family) played on a shared computer, each individual person would requier their own copy. Originally, EA apologised saying it was a mis-print, but, due to customer complaints, have had to allow mulitple profiles (up to 5) per copy of spore.

It doesn’t end there though! They keep on treating customers like crap and bringing more bad publicity upon themselves! They’ve actually threatened to disable the accounts of anyone who complains about DRM on the spore forums. This, in the words of the moderators in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore”

Spore’s DRM system first limited the number of installations of the game to three, but this was later expanded to five installations after a public backlash, with thousands of one-star reviews appearing on Amazon. Spore’s DRM system also faced a backlash after it became apparent that you couldn’t set up more than one account in the game on shared computers.
