A return to World War II, as the next version of Call of Duty promises co-operative online play and flamethrower frolics

After a brief foray into the world of modern weaponry, not to mention British leading characters with stupid names, the Call of Duty series is now returning to World War II for its fifth outing, called World at War. However, Activision promises that the game will offer more than your usual World War II battling, saying that World at War ‘throws out the rulebook of war to transform WWII combat through a new enemy, new tactics and an uncensored experience of the climatic battles that gripped a generation.’

You get to play either the US Marines or the Russians, and the game introduces cooperative gameplay to the mix, as well as a flamethrower weapon, which looks like a lot of fun in the trailer (see below). The game is being developed by Treyarch, and the company’s studio head, Mark Lamia, claims that the game will give you ‘a host of new enemies that employ entirely new tactics, as well as new, groundbreaking tools – like co-op and the flamethrower – to succeed in the epic fight.’

The new co-op mode allows PC gamers to play with up to four other players online, while PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will also get the option to play a local co-op game with a two-player, split-screen setup. According to Activision, playing the new co-op campaign will also allow you to ‘unlock perks’ for use in the competitive multiplayer mode, as well as allowing you to rack up experience points. The game will also ‘scale dynamically to provide a deeper level of challenge’ according to your experience rank, as well as the ranks of your friends.

Call of Duty: World at War is scheduled to be released in Autumn this year. Could this game repeat the phenomenal chart-topping success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare? Let us know your thoughts.

Release date is November the 11th Smile Cant wait.

Here are the minimum specs, they seem to have changed very little, i imagine this is because it is aimed squarely at consoles as the priority.

Much as it pains me to say it, i think pc gaming is almost a dying art these days. The consoles are doing so well at the moment and pc games are pirated to death.
