Far Cry 2 requires an even bigger beast of a computer than Crysis did, and that bought some really good pc's to their knees Smile

Ubisoft reveals the official system requirements for Far Cry 2, showing that it takes advanatge of multi-threading, and needs a more powerful PC than Crysis

Although most of us have already bought, tweaked, played and completed Crytek’s unofficial sequel to Far Cry, Crysis, Ubisoft is still going ahead with the official sequel Far Cry 2, and has now released the system requirements.

Surprisingly, the minimum system requirements are even higher than those of Crysis, which is amazing considering that Crysis brought most high-end PCs to their knees when Crysis was first released. The official minimum system requirements for Far Cry 2 are as follows:

3.2GHz Pentium 4 or 2.66GHz Pentium D (looks like it takes advantage of multi-threading)
1GB of RAM
256MB GeForce 6800-series GPU or Radeon X1650
The game also requires Shader Model 3, so it won’t work with ATI’s older X800 GPUs. By comparison, the minimum specs officially required for Crysis are a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 and a Radeon 9800 Pro. However, a machine based on those specs would be reduced to a gibbering wreck by Crysis at anything approaching half-decent settings.

Meanwhile, the recommended system requirements for Far Cry 2 are as follows:

Recommended

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Family, AMD 64 X2 5200+, AMD Phenom or better

RAM: 2 GB

Video card: NVidia 8600 GTS or better, ATI X1900 or better

512 Mb of graphic memory

Sound: 5.1 sound card recommended

Supported Video cards:

NVidia 6800, NVidia 7000 series, 8000 series, 9000 series, 200 series. 8800M and 8700M supported for laptops. ATI X1650 – 1950 series , HD2000 series , HD3000 series , HD4000 series .

From the Ubisoft website:

The extensive artistic research combined with the next-gen engine will allow you to explore over 50Km2 of seamlessly rendered African landscape. No game has ever provided such freedom of movement!

Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat.

I still cant wait for it, i loved Far Cry and hopefully the sequal will be just as good if not better.

New update for yall.

Quote:
Today at IDF Intel showed a demo of Far Cry 2, and confirmed that it’s not only incredibly pretty, but is multi-threaded, with AI and CPU-based Havok physics running as separate threads for multi-core CPU. Renee James, Vice President and General Manger of Intel Software and Solutions Group, talked us through the gameplay to explain what was happening.

First off James pointed out the complex and detailed scenary, with grass and other foliage blowing in the wind. The underlying geometry of these objects is created by the CPU, though James didn't say whether the object animations are scripted or dynamic - either way, it's the CPU that calculated the movement. Next she revealed that the clouds of Far Cry 2 are not merely painted onto a skybox texture as with most games, but are actually calculated, again on the CPU.

Explosions in Far Cry 2 tend to smash up the world spectacularly, as the game uses a Havok physics engine, which is run as a separate unit (and therefore as a independent thread) on the CPU. This is unlike Nvidia’s PhysX physics APU which is accelerated on a GeForce GPU. james didn't elaborate whether the havok engine in Far Cry 2 was Havok FX (which was previously only accelerated on GPUs) or another Havok physics engine.

AI in Far Cry 2 is also run as a separate work unit on the CPU, making animals (and we presume enemies, though James only talked about deer as the demo we saw didn’t have combat) react differently and realistically to threats or environmental changes. Advanced AI is important in games with destructible scenery, as NPCs need sufficientlt adept pathfinding skills to navigate the ever-changing layout of the game world.

Intel is obviously keen to push multi-threading applications, whether those applications are games or more mundane software, as the message being repeated again and again during IDF is that Intel will just add more cores rather than significantly ramping up single-core performance. To aid developers in the creation of multi-threaded applications Intel will launch Parallel Studio (a four-tool plug-in for Microsoft’s Visual Studio) in BETA in November. Intel will also be releasing plug-ins for compilers for Nehalem and Larrabee in the near future.

As yet we don’t know how many cores Far Cry 2 will scale across, so we’ll have to wait until it’s released later this year and run our own tests.

First impressions after a couple of hours.

Gorgeous looking game with excellent effects, even blood looks nice. The AI can be very predictable and once they get sight of you there's no escape. weapon pick ups are plenty but are poorly maintained and jam just at the wrong time. Flame thrower works really well!!!!

Down side, pissing around searching for diamonds to buy more weapons. Although you can roam the huge map there isn't that much to do apart from the side missions andyou main one.

Piccies and maybe a vid to follow later.

To put it plainly its a great game, there is a feel of randomness and open-ended feel to the single player missions, as every buddy you have has different twists albeit on the same missions.

Your choice of starting character (all a bunch of misfits for sure) only really sets the scene for what people might be able to be your buddies who will set missions and rescue you if you go down.

The rescue parts are very good, so if you have a good contact they might just show up when you hit the dirt.

Vehicles (jeeps) are very good, and the mishaps of the AI drivers as they fall off cliffs or flip them after a few mistakes are classic.

I'm not keen on the weapon accuracy modifications, but aside from that the jams of the pickup weapons are classy, with some very distinctive jam-clearing animations.

MGL-140 for the most fun i have found so far.

Online, i probably won't bother but its certainly diverting as a single player game, some good twists in the plot and a variet of missions and the terrain is surprisingly good, especially if you can find a really high point on a mountain.
